Opening Wager Vanquishes Fierce
Cat In The Ohio Freshman Stakes
November 14, 2004

Blazing Meadows Farm LLC and Mike Stone’s Opening Wager staked his claim to top two-year-old in Ohio with a rousing 1-length victory in the $40,000 Ohio Freshman Stakes at Beulah Park on Sunday. Second longest shot on the board at 29-1, Opening Wager clashed with heavy favorite Fierce Cat as well as a host of others through the one-mile contest. After disposing of Fierce Cat at the ¼ pole, Opening Wager reserved enough to kick clear of fast closing Willen down the lane. The running time for the mile over the fast track was 1:42 4/5.

Jockey Irwin Rosendo said, “ He is a little stubborn and I had to stay right on him from the start. In the stretch, he started fighting back when the other horse (Willen) was coming on the inside. He was full of run today.” The 25-year-old rider is based at Thistledown in Cleveland.

As far as future plans, trainer Tim Hamm says, “ This does if for him this year. He is going to the farm in Ocala, Florida where he will get a long winter’s rest. I will bring him back for the three-year-old Ohio Stakes program next spring.”

Now 2 for 9 lifetime, Opening Wager returned $61.20, $13.20 and $9.60. Willen closed strongly for second and paid $5.00 and 4.00. Circulator held gamely to third and had a payoff of $3.20. The 6-5 favorite Fierce Cat faded to sixth.
