“Michel” Just In Time In The Samuel Handicap
December 18, 2004

M.Y. Stables, Inc.’s Just Michel used the inside part of the track to her advantage to pull off the upset in the $25,000 Samuel Handicap at Beulah Park on Saturday. Ten accomplished Beulah Park starters set sail as a trio of pacesetters, including odds-on favorite Mercer’s Launch, grappled for the lead in the early stages. Restrained in the middle of the pack, Just Michel started to weave her way through traffic before maneuvering towards the fence for the final furlong. Surging forward, Just Michel collared Mercer’s Launch in the final strides to win by a neck in a running time of 1:12 2/5 for the six furlongs over the fast track.

Jockey Yuri Yaranga said, “ The inside part of the track was good so I went to the rail inside of the other two horses (Mercer’s Launch and One Bad Dude). It was the best place to be. This marked the first stakes victory in Ohio this season for Yaranga.

Trainer Michael Nance plans on running Just Michel during the upcoming winter season at Beulah Park that begins January 8th, 2005. Nance is no stranger to good sprint talent having conditioned past Ohio sprint stars Downthepike Mike and Ben’s Reflection.

Winning for the second time in five starts this year, Just Michel paid $25.40, $3.60 and $2.20. Mercer’s Launch dug in gamely for second and returned $2.10 and $2.10. Brent’s Challanger closed strongly for third and had a payoff of $2.20.
